The University of Wyoming Music Department and the Wyoming Trumpet Guild will offer a day of trumpet master classes, clinics, and performances from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 26 at the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA).

Hosted by David Wharton, assistant professor in the UW Department of Music, the Wyoming Trumpet Workshop will feature nationally acclaimed guest artists Derek McDonald, Howard Shear and David Ware.

Ware, visiting assistant professor of music at Jackson State University, will kick off the workshop with a trumpet clinic. With over 20 years of experience in secondary and higher education, Ware offers expertise as a music educator, jazz and classical musician, clinician, private trumpet teacher, and academic and performance coach.

Shear would follow with a mass trumpet set and jazz combo rehearsals, and later lead a jazz improvisation class. Shear, a jazz trumpet professor at California State University-Northridge and session musician, has extensive experience performing with various jazz bands, including his own quartet.

After touring the world as lead trumpeter in the Woody Herman Big Band, Shear moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a session musician. For the past 40 years he has recorded music for film and television and performed live concerts.

McDonald, an applied trumpet teacher and coach for the Regis University Jazz Ensemble and Bands, will share his expertise with an orchestral masterclass. He appears as principal trumpet in the Boulder Chamber Orchestra, Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, Greeley Philharmonic and Opera Steamboat. He is also Principal/Associate Principal Trumpet with the Colorado Ballet Orchestra and the Fort Collins Symphony; and alternate trumpet with the Boulder Philharmonic, Colorado Symphony Orchestra and Opera Colorado.

To wrap up the event, guest clinicians will host a free public concert for workshop attendees at 3:30 p.m. in the BCPA Concert Hall.
