Roland-Story takes second place at Dennis Field Invite, splits opening duels
The Roland-Story wrestling team opened the season last week by parting with a double-duel with Gilbert and Bondurant-Farrar on December 2 at Gilbert and taking second place at the Dennis Field Invitational in Woodward on Saturday.
The Norsemen beat Gilbert by a score of 57-20 and suffered a 55-23 loss to Bondurant-Farrar. They won eight games by fall and one by decision against Gilbert and won three pins and a victory by technical fall against Bondurant-Farrar.
At the Dennis Field Invitational, they scored 172 points to beat Woodward-Granger’s 204.5 points out of 10 competing schools. Roland-Story crowned five tournament champions.
Here’s what we learned from Roland-Story’s opening week:
Veterans dominate at Field Invite
Roland-Story fires state champion Kade Blume (106 pounds) and eighth setter Christian Eslick (145). They also bring back talented veterans Logan Powers (138), Hesston Johnson (160), Jaxson Kadolph (195), Noah Wakefield (120), Eli Thorson (182), Levi Webb (106) and Colin Hansen (285).
Blume, Eslick, Powers, Johnson and Kadolph each won a championship at the Dennis Field Invite. Blume struggled at 113 and Eslick at 152.
Blume pinned Addi Adango of Des Monies North-Hoover and won by technology fall (19-3) over Kael Ciakowski of Southeast Warren / Melcher-Dallas. Eslick pinned Brayden Simons of Woodward-Granger, Cody Jackson of North-Hoover, Austin Chally of Saydel, Cole Metz of SEW / MD and Johnnie Cassady of Martensdale St. Marys.
Powers pinned Robert Beardsley of SEW / MD, Tjaden Smeltzer of Woodward-Granger, Conor Cassady of MSM, and Rolando Santana-Salgado of North-Hoover. He also scored a 1-0 victory over Kolton Keller of Saydel.
Johnson pinned North-Hoover’s Jake Rattray, scored a 17-2 tech drop over MSM’s Sampson Henson and won a 3-2 decision by Woodward-Granger’s Dustin Harney. Kadolph pinned Bryce Hockenson of Woodward-Granger, Jacob Meshek of Coon Rapids-Bayard and Marshall Day of Collins-Maxwell and added a major 8-0 decision over Kaiden Feldman of North-Hoover.
Wakefield (120) and Thorson (182) both placed second at Woodward. Wakefield went 4-1 with three pins and a decision win and Thorson was 3-1 with all three wins in the fall and his only loss a 3-2 decision against the place winner from the State in 2021, Brody Sampson of Collins-Maxwell.
Webb took third place at 106 with a pin. Hanson was fourth at 285 with two falls.
Three Nordiques go 2-0 to the double-dual
Blume, Eslick and Johnson won their two matches in the Gilbert double to open the season.
Blume fought 106 against Reid Foster of Bondurant-Farrar and won by Tech Fall (22-6). He climbed to 113 against Gilbert’s John Artz and scored a fall in 1:47.
Eslick pinned Bondurant-Farrar’s Caleb Kramer in 46 seconds and Gilbert’s Eli Branson in 3:40-152. Johnson competed at 160 and blocked Bondurant-Farrar’s Trent Paxton in 47 seconds and took a victory of 8-5 on Gilbert’s Hank Johnson.
Six other Norse get pins against Gilbert
Powers (138), Kadolph (195), Hansen (285), Webb (106), Colin Streit (126) and Isaac Hall (132) each won by fall against Gilbert. Powers pinned Charlie Schreck of the Tigers in 1:52, Kadolph dealt with Levi Lewis in 4:49, Hansen beat Nicolas Romero in 47 seconds, Webb beat Dennis May in 51 seconds, Streit knocked down Braeden Nees in 2:49 and Hall got stuck in Holt Bellon in 2:39.
Wakefield added a forfeit victory over Gilbert.
Roland Yates also clinched a victory on the night for Roland-Story. Yates struggled at 220 and defeated Bondurant-Farrar’s Quinten Fulton by fall in 40 seconds.
