Memphis will hold a race in Fletcher’s honor

The Memphis community plans to hold a running event on Friday to honor Eliza Fletcher and raise awareness of the heartbreaking circumstances of her death.

Called “Let’s Finish Liza’s Run”, the event was originally for a few friends to run 10 miles together, but quickly exploded when a Facebook post announcing it went viral.

“My intention was to start near her home and go down Central to Zach H Curlin and back down Central,” organizer Danielle Heineman told ABC24. “However, it’s exploded since my original Facebook post, so now we’re looking at going from Peabody and Belvedere or Central and Belvedere so we don’t have crowds near her.”

Ms Heineman said she hoped the event would send a message to critics who blamed Ms Fletcher for jogging at a time they deemed unsafe.

“We run at four in the morning, and you know what, we can run at four in the morning,” she said. “And we can wear our sports bra and shorts and not be fully covered from head to toe.”
