Lagos, Nigeria: A multi-story building collapses in Lagos, Nigeria
The building, located on Gerald Road in the affluent Ikoyi district, is a construction site for luxury apartments. It is not known how many people were inside when he fell.
“I thought it was an earthquake when I rushed out of my apartment just after 3 p.m. I felt the building move and I knew something was wrong,” CNN told CNN. Olu Apata, a local resident and president of the Nigerian Bar Association.
Apata said the building had been under construction for two years and the developer was on site to meet with potential buyers earlier on Monday.
Three people have since been rescued from the collapse, according to a statement from the Lagos state government, which added that the city’s rescue unit, fire department and ambulance service were on site.
The statement did not indicate how many people are currently missing.
Investigation into the cause of the collapse is ongoing and officials in the field are assessing possible damage to surrounding structures, the statement said.
Muhammad, an official, told CNN he was in his office next door when the skyscraper collapsed. âWe just heard a loud unusual noise coming from our office building and the building we occupy was vibrating. So I looked out the window, only to see the building collapsing floor after floor. And of course, we all ran to safety. “
The emergency services took a long time to arrive on the scene. Hours after the collapse, hundreds of people circled the site, helplessly pacing concrete slabs piled in piles. The inhabitants searched the wreckage by hand.
Some in the crowd were furious that an official emergency response had not started.
Instead, the rescue efforts were led by passers-by such as Rashid Olamilekan, who told CNN he pulled three construction workers out of the rubble. “I am a Nigerian. I must save my people,” he said. The rescued workers were taken to hospital, Olamilekan added.
The Nigerian Red Cross was also present.
Building collapses are not uncommon in Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city with a population of around 20 million.
An expert told CNN at the time that more than 1,000 buildings were at risk of collapsing in Lagos.
