Jujutsu Kaisen Executive Explains How Risky His Debut Film Was

Jujutsu Kaisen surprised fans everywhere when the anime’s first season was followed by a feature debut, and one of the executives behind the movie talked about how risky it was to branch out with a movie. The show’s first season was one of the most successful anime debuts in recent memory, so it wasn’t too surprising to see that it would be releasing a new movie just under a year after it ended. . But what was surprising was seeing it pick up the original story by Gege Akutami, and those behind the film were worried it would miss out on some of the anime’s key characters.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie introduced fans to a new main character, and while there were characters from the main series, there was initial hesitation to follow the successful anime with such a major detour. But as Studio MAPPA CEO Manabu Otsuka explained, while there is some risk involved in releasing a new movie without most of the threads from the 20+ episode first season, the The studio team was convinced that the prequel had enough of a standalone story to succeed regardless.

Speak with Anime News Network about tracking risk Jujutsu Kaisen’s anime with a new movie focusing on the prequel, Studio MAPPA CEO Manabu Otsuka explained, “…maybe there was a risk. Because if you look at it from the point of view that they end two courses in the series and then continue in a movie that doesn’t have the characters that people know, maybe there was a risk.” But then explained that the prequel story had a strong enough story to pass, “But when we saw story 0, it was such a powerful story on its own. We were pretty confident that the fans were going to appreciate for themselves.”

It might have been a high risk, but it was also a big reward with tons of success not just in Japan, but around the world.
