Is the horror movie Barbarian based on a true story?

HBO Max has added a new horror movie to its catalog just in time for Halloween! Barbaric is now streaming on the platform, following its theatrical release on September 9, 2022.

There are plenty of disturbing stories that have been adapted into a television or film narrative. So is this the case with the 20th Century Studios film?

Georgina Campbell stars as Tess Marshall, with Bill Skarsgård as Keith Toshko. The production also stars Justin Long, Matthew Patrick Davis, Richard Brake, Kurt Braunohler, among others.

So where did the inspiration for the film come from? We have the answer for you below!

Is the movie Barbarian based on a true story?

The new movie Barbaric is not based on a true story. The film is written and directed by Zach Cregger. According to Cinemaholic, Cregger came up with the idea for the horror based on a non-fiction novel, The gift of fear: survival signals that protect us from violence by author Gavin de Becker.

If you haven’t seen the movie, you might be wondering what it’s about. The story follows Tess Marshall (Campbell) who discovers that the rental house she has booked already has a man, Keith (Skarsgård), staying there. He says the owner made a mistake and double booked the house. Against her better judgment, she decides to stay the night. But she will soon discover that she has a lot more to fear from the other house guest and maybe she should have listened to her instincts.

Fortunately, this production is not based on real events. But unfortunately there are other recent shows like Peacock’s A family friend and those of Netflix The Observer which are based on true stories. These two should be added to your watch list too!
