A Sunshine Coast man has died, roads and highways are cut and vehicles washed away in flooded streams as major flooding hits the neighboring Gympie region to the north and west.

The dead, 22, was found in his vehicle on Saturday morning, apparently after being washed away by Cherry Tree Road, near the epicenter of heavy rainfall in Kanigan.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned of probable major flooding in Maryborough on Sunday morning, as significant flooding is reported in Miva and Tiaro, as well as in the western districts of Gympie from Kilkivan and Woolooga to Goomeri.

Gympie Regional Council has announced the opening of evacuation centers in Kilkivan and Goomeri Halls as severe flooding affects neighboring districts and cuts or damages some roads.

More than 650mm fell at Mount Kanigan, in one of the worst affected areas, as emergency teams scramble to check the safety of others, who are said to be stranded by the flooding and extreme rainfall.

Continuous rain added to heavy falls yesterday and overnight, adding to previous heavy rainfall.
