Investment thesis

Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Company (NYSE: HPE) is an information technology company headquartered in Spring, Texas. In this thesis, I will analyze the impact of HPE’s exit from Russia and Belarus and its outperformance by the HPE Intelligent Edge Segment. I will also discuss some of the risks that HPE currently faces, including lower revenue growth in certain segments. HPE is a great edge-to-cloud company and has seen strong backlog growth over the past few quarters, but after considering all risk factors and future prospects, I’m giving a rating of retention at HPE.

Company presentation

HPE has ranked its activity in six segments: Intelligent Edge, HPC & AI, Compute, Storage, Financial Services and Corporate Investments. These different business segments operate under unique brands or platforms. Intelligent Edge operates under the Aruba brand and provides businesses with wired and wireless local area networking (LAN), software-defined wide area networking, and network security. HPC & AI provides hardware as well as software solutions that can be customized according to customer requirements.

HPE Apollo and Cray are the main brands under which HPC & AI operates. Compute is HPE’s largest segment by revenue; he is responsible for managing and optimizing the workload for high-performance applications. The compute business operates through HPE ProLiant servers and provides services to complement workload optimization. The storage segment provides storage as a service through the HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform. I think the storage business has great potential in the future, given the heavy reliance of organizations on data. Financial services and corporate investment are primarily advisory and consulting segments that help companies invest and manage their costs.

Turnover and geographical distribution

Investor Relations

The calculation occupies majority of revenue share at 44%, followed by Storage at 16%, Intelligent Edge at 13%, Financial Services at 12%, HPC & AI at 10%, and Corporate Investment at 5%. HPE believes that Intelligent Edge’s share will increase in the future, given the strong demand it has experienced in recent quarters. In terms of geographic revenue split, North America leads with 39%, followed by EMEA at 37% and Asia-Pacific and Japan at 24%.

Impact of the cessation of operations in Russia and Belarus

At the end of February, HPE suspended the delivery of products to Russia and Belarus due to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict at the time. June 1stHPE has issued an official statement confirming the cessation of operations in Russia and Belarus. HPE reported $126 million of charges and expenses related to this exit in Q2 2022, and management expects lower charges in Q3 2022 related to the exit from Russia and Belarus.

According to my analysis, the impact of this exit was not significant, but it still caused a decline of approximately $0.3 to $0.4 per share in the company’s EPS, which corresponds to 10% of BPA reported by HPE. The Russian-Ukrainian war not only caused a loss of income for Russia but also for European countries due to the economic downturn throughout Europe, mainly due to this war. I expect the Q3 impact due to the exit of Russia and Belarus to be in the range of $0.3 to $0.5 per share, but we have to wait for the announcement of the results officials, then I can analyze the impact in detail.

Smart edge outperformance

Intelligent Edge posted robust 9% growth in Q2 2022, and the order pipeline grew 35% from Q2 2022. I expect Intelligent Edge to take an even bigger revenue share over the next FY23 due to the as-a-service model being implemented by HPE to grow its customer base. Under this model, customers will only pay for the services they use instead of paying for the full package. This strategy will help HPE expand its market presence by reducing the cost burden for customers. According to my analysis, intelligent Edge currently has gross margins, which can be as high as 15.5% from the fourth quarter of 2022, given the positive response and growth of the Intelligent Edge as-a-service model.

Additional positive features

Strong dividend yield: HPE said a $0.12 dividend per share in the second quarter of 2022. At the current price, the dividend is 3.45%. The company has been consistent in paying dividends over the past few years. Even at the current level, the dividend yield looks attractive. I believe there is room for dividend growth in FY23 as margins improve with improving sourcing as well as material sourcing costs.

Increase in orders: HPE announced the fourth consecutive quarter with a 20% increase in total orders. Intelligent Edge led this backlog increase with a 35% increase, followed by Compute with 20% and HPC & AI with a 15% increase. This surge in orders resulted in the company’s highest ever backlog in the order pipeline. I believe that if the company can fulfill these orders in the third and fourth quarters of 2022, it will post record profits with good profit margins.

DRY: 10Q HPE

Demand for HPE products is cyclical in nature; therefore, I will compare the results on an annual basis. HPE reported Q2 2022 revenue of $6.7 billion, up a negligible 1.5% currency-adjusted. The main reason for this steady revenue growth is the inability to fulfill orders due to supply chain issues in IT hardware procurement. Gross margins were 32.7%, a slight decrease from the previous year, which is attributed to the $126 million incurred out of Russia and Belarus. Diluted EPS was unchanged from the prior year period at $0.19 under GAAP. I think the result was flat and does not warrant order growth being the metric to judge the company’s growth trajectory. According to my analysis, the results have not been impressive, and even the outlook for FY22 is not impressive, with revenue growth estimated at only 3-4%.

Risk factor

Lower revenues and profits of important segments: Storage and Financial Services were both down 2% from Q2 2022. They represent 28% of HPE’s total revenue, and a decline in these segments is not a positive. The Compute segment, which accounts for 44% of HPE’s total revenue, saw only a 1% increase. This means that almost 72% of the total revenue-generating segments showed no growth despite a strong backlog. The reason for the decline in growth is supply chain issues faced by HPE, which they expect will continue through the remainder of FY22.

Distribution of profits

Investor Relations

Profit margins were also down from a year ago. According to my analysis, the trend is likely to continue in FY22 with the Covid-19 restrictions in China adding to HPE’s problems. Additionally, the loss of the HPC & AI segment is cause for concern.

Quantitative ratings and evaluation

Quantitative assessments

Looking for Alpha

My thesis is part of Quantitative assessments to a large extent. I agree that the company is undervalued in terms of valuation, but the growth factor is the real cause for concern with the D- rating. Profitability has also deteriorated from A to A- over the past three months. Overall, the company needs to fix a few issues before I can consider it an opportunity for growth. HPE is currently trading at $13.92, down 13.79% year-to-date. The company has a market capitalization of $18.1 billion. HPE has corrected in line with market expectations and is trading at fair value with a PE multiple of 5x. Compared to its competitors, HPE is trading at a discount, but the supply chain issue is limiting its growth.

Conclusion

My final thought on HPE is that it’s important for them to fulfill backlogs while addressing the supply chain issue limiting its growth. For now, the company seems fairly valued and could be a long-term growth prospect if it delivers on its promise. But the subdued outlook doesn’t compel me to take a position on the stock at this time. After analyzing all of the company’s growth and risk factors and considering its current valuation, I give HPE a holding rating.

TORONTO — The Red Sox are without an outfielder Jarren Duran and right-handed Tanner Houck, both placed on the shortlist due to their unvaccinated status. Three months ago, the Red Sox wanted to make sure it wouldn’t be the same for Trevor’s Story.

As Story neared a deal on his six-year, $140 million contract in March, the Sox said Story needed to get a COVID-19 shot. It’s a stance the team took in large part because they wanted to ensure he would be available for all games in Canada (which requires visitors to be vaccinated), including any games in Canada. post-season.

The Sox do not have a set policy requiring vaccination, but all other players the Sox had signed by that time from spring training were, and the team wanted to avoid a scenario in which a player potentially pivot would be unavailable for crucial games. against a key opponent in the division.

Ultimately, Story agreed to get vaccinated out of a desire to be available. As he prepared to face the Blue Jays at Rogers Center on Monday, Story felt his decision was the right one.

“For me, it’s a very personal decision, whichever way you want to decide. But at the end of the day, that’s what had to be done — play these games in Canada. We obviously know how difficult this division is. Every game matters,” Story said. “So here we are.”

The second baseman suggested it would have been difficult to be away from the team for those games, especially with the Red Sox in the midst of one of their hottest spells in 20 years.

“It feels like every day when you come to the park, it’s contagious. We feel like we’re building a lot of momentum. The guys arrive at 12:30 p.m., 1 p.m. for a game at 7 p.m. Good teams that I’ve been part of in the past, that’s how it is. It’s exciting, man,” Story said. “It’s something I want to be a part of.”

Without Duran and Houck, the Red Sox called Monday’s starter Connor Seabold and infielder Yolmer Sanchez of Triple-A Worcester. Right-hander Silvino Bracho is part of the taxi team.

Around the list of injured

Garret Whitlock – on the injured list since June 10 with a sprained right hip – kicked off a bullpen session in Toronto. He will throw a mound again on Friday in Chicago and will also participate in field drills in an effort to stress the injured area.

“It went well,” the Sox manager said Alex Cora. “I think [Friday’s fielding drills are] the most important thing, actually, for him is to move around and see how he feels and we’ll decide what we do after that.

left handed Chris Sale kicked off a bullpen session in Fort Myers on Monday morning and will travel to Double-A Portland before departing Thursday, Cora said. Meanwhile, left-handed Josh Taylor will make a one-round appearance in rehab with Portland on Tuesday. While the reliever has made appearances in the game every other day, Cora said the Sox will likely want him to progress to the point where he pitches on consecutive days before activating him.

At this point, it’s possible Taylor will join a left-handed reliever crowd that already includes Matt Strahm, Jake Diekmanand austin davis.

“It’s too early to start thinking about four southpaws in the bullpen,” Cora said. “Let’s prep it, get it back healthy, and the front office will do what it does.”

Nate Eovaldi – on the injured list since June 10 with lower back pain – played on Monday and could start a bullpen session on Wednesday. outfielder Kike Hernandez (hip) started throwing, but still not swinging or taking fly balls.

Triston Casas among healthy prospects

According to the farm manager Brian Abraham, Triston Casas started swinging a bat again on Monday. The second Red Sox prospect, out since May 17 with a sprained right ankle, is in rehab in Fort Myers. Due to the amount of stress the 6-foot-5, 260-pound slugger puts on his landing foot, the team had waited until he could swing without pain before having him try again. . . right-handed Bryan Mata will pitch for Portland on Tuesday as he returns from Tommy John surgery in April 2021. The 23-year-old pitcher made four rehab starts, the last three with High-A Greenville, before being activated from the roster casualties with the aim of returning to higher levels. . . right-handed Thad Wardout since undergoing Tommy John surgery last June, hosted a mock game at the team’s spring training complex in Fort Myers over the weekend and could begin a rehab assignment as soon as this week.

Yang Weigen, or as many call him “Uncle Gen”, has worked as a social worker for drug addicts in Guangzhou for more than 10 years. He received many awards of “Guangzhou Outstanding Individual in Combating Drug Abuse”. However, before getting this job, he fought a long battle with addiction.

“It was October 1991. A business partner of mine brought a stranger to our karaoke night. This stranger bought a small bag of white powder and started snorting. He said if I tried, all my worries would disappear,” Yang said.

He struggled with drug addiction for 10 years and became a volunteer shortly after coming out of rehab for the third time. Three years later, he was employed by the local government as a social worker due to his outstanding work. Yang now helps fight drug addiction by giving speeches and helping drug addicts turn their lives around.

“At first, I refused his help, but he continued to contact me every day for three months, and I was moved. He helped me quit drugs and find part-time jobs to make money,” said Chen Xin, a former drug addict.

Yang has a small team of social workers, police, psychologists and former drug addicts, like Chen Xin. He said being part of the team can help former drug addicts stay sober and use their past experience to help others.

“Addicts are often very stubborn. They don’t listen to anyone, but they usually listen to us because we know what they’re going through,” Yang said.

Working with drug addicts is not an easy task and requires extra patience. Yang said he has seen many social workers change jobs over the past 10 years, but he remains persistent and hopes he can help more people.

China’s drug control situation continues to improve as the number of drug-related crimes and the scale of drug abuse have declined, officials told a news conference held Thursday by the Ministry of Public Security, three days before the 35th International Anti-Drug Day. Abuse and Illicit Traffic.

The number of drug crimes has risen from 140,000 in 2017 to 54,000 in 2021, with an average annual decline of more than 20% for five consecutive years, officials said.

By the end of 2021, China had nearly 1.49 million registered illicit drug users, down 42.1% from 2016, including 121,000 newly identified drug users, down 72.8% from 2016, according to the press conference.

Over the past five years, the results of drug rehabilitation have been consolidated. By the end of 2021, about 3.4 million former drug addicts had quit using after three years of rehabilitation, up 2.4 times from 2016, officials said at the press conference.

It’s been almost a decade since Baz Luhrmann released a movie in theaters – his 2013 adaptation of The Great Gatsby – but the wait for a new movie from the Australian director is finally over thanks to Elvis.

An epic biopic of the king of rock ‘n’ roll, the film charts his subject’s rise from carnival singer to pop culture icon to Las Vegas performer, touching on various aspects of his life, including the influence of black music about his work, his romance with Priscilla Presley, and his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction.

Besides Elvis himself, one person who is constantly present throughout the film is Colonel Tom Parker – the King’s longtime manager who is played by Tom Hanks and turns out to be an extremely sleazy and manipulative figure who took advantage of the talents of his client more and more. unethical ways.

Speaking about why he chose to frame the film from Parker’s point of view, Luhrmann told RadioTimes.com that it was due to the modern relevance “of these guys who would be quite proud to narrate…I guess you call them lies.”

He added: “But really, big toxic positive lies – the carnival sale.

“Well, you put that next to Elvis, who is this incredibly vulnerable kid growing up in one of the few white houses in the black community – like Eminem.

“And it just seems to be talking about right now, the tension between the carnival sale, the peddling, the snake oil bit, and then the vulnerable and the pure and honest.”

But who exactly was the real Colonel Tom Parker? Read on for everything you need to know.

Who was Colonel Tom Parker?

Born in the Netherlands as Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk – the seventh child of a delivery driver and housewife – Parker first came to the United States as an illegal immigrant in 1929, when he was twenty years old.

Shortly after arriving, he created a whole new identity for himself, adopting the name Tom Parker and claiming to be born in the United States. During his first years in the country, he served two years in the US Army, but was discharged when he was certified as a psychopath by a psychiatrist.

He then embarked on a career as a carnival worker before moving into music promotion in 1938, with his pre-Elvis clients, including Gene Austin, a popular crooner, and a succession of country singers such as Eddy Arnold, Hank Snow and Tommy Sands.

He earned the title of colonel when he aided popular country and gospel singer Jimmie Davis in his campaign to be elected governor of Louisiana, receiving the honorary rank as Davis’ award in 1948.

Parker’s first encounter with Presley was in early 1955 after hearing his music on the radio and being impressed by his rather different singing style – initially assuming he was black.

At this time, Memphis radio personality Bob Neal was Presley’s manager, but he soon realized he was struggling to get enough time to promote his client. So after a meeting between Parker and Presley in February 1955, the Colonel began to take control. reservations and promotions.

For a time Parker and Neal worked together, with Parker becoming “special adviser” to Elvis in the summer of 1955 – which brought him the responsibility of securing a new recording contract with a bigger label.

In March 1956 – when Presley’s existing contract with Neal expired – Parker became his sole representative and with a new recording contract from RCA Victor, Elvis’ career went from strength to strength, with his first single Heartbreak Hotel released to huge acclaim later that year.

During their partnership, Parker received more than half of Elvis’ earnings – and in turn, he negotiated various merchandising deals, television appearances and acting roles for his client, as well as advice on other areas of his life, including his decision to join the military. service in 1958 and to marry Priscilla Beaulieu in 1967.

It also pushed him to make musicals the main focus of his career in the 60s and to play a major role in his comeback in 1968 – and although their meetings were quite limited after that time he was still listed as Elvis’ manager until the star’s death in 1977.

Even after Presley’s death, Parker continued to manage his estate – but partly because he had sold the rights to all the early recordings, and partly because of a major gambling addiction – he struggled. to make ends meet.

His woes were compounded in 1980, when a judge found his management had been unethical, and it also emerged that Presley had lost millions of dollars in royalties for songs he had written due to of Parker’s decision not to enroll him in The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP).

Ultimately, a deal between Elvis Presley Estate and Parker ended, with the latter receiving $2 million in exchange for any audio recordings or visual images of Presley he owned. and ending his involvement in any income related to Presley for five years.

In January 1997, at the age of 87, he died in Las Vegas after a long battle with various health issues, including diabetes and gout. His funeral was attended by Elvis’ widow, Priscilla, who delivered a eulogy in which she joked, “Elvis and the Colonel have made history together, and the world is richer, better, and much more interesting. Thanks to their cooperation And now I have to locate my wallet, because I noticed that there was no counter at the entrance, but I’m sure the colonel must have provided a toll at the exit . »

A five-story apartment building for low-income and recently homeless residents may soon replace a sprawling parking lot west of downtown Rochester.

The demand for such accommodation is great.

“The gap between people’s incomes and the cost of housing isn’t getting better,” said David Cleghorn, who is on the development team at a nonprofit organization called HELP USA. “We have an affordability crisis across the country.”

More than half of Rochester households are considered rent dependent, spending more than 30% of their income on housing. It was before the pandemic. Rents have continued to rise, but experts say affordability in the city stems from falling incomes and poverty.

The Center City Courtyard proposal with its 160 apartments is designed for this population.

Half of the units would be supportive housing with social services, medical and mental health care available on site. All would be affordable to those earning less than 60% of the region’s median income.

The U-shaped building would rise between West Main and Broad streets, in front of the city’s school district central office. What there is now is a gravel lot, over an acre, encompassing an entire city block.

The west side of downtown is riddled with parking lots, but less and less as developers build or reserve lots for tenant use. The courtyard project includes underground parking for residents and visitors.

HELP USA is a national affordable housing developer based in New York. The company is making its first foray into Rochester, partnering with local developer CDS.

“We’ve looked at projects over the years in Rochester,” said Cleghorn, the organization’s housing director, “and decided to pass them all on so far.”

The nonprofit got its start in the mid-1980s, opening apartment-style homeless shelters with on-site services in Brooklyn and the Bronx. This turned into permanent housing projects, like what is proposed here.

Cleghorn oversees this aspect of the business, serving as the organization’s housing manager. Over the past decade, HELP USA has undertaken more than a dozen such developments in multiple states.

“There is a huge need for affordable housing everywhere,” Cleghorn said. “The amount of housing we need to build to be affordable, true affordability to exist, is simply staggering.

“And developing permanent housing like we do, which is multi-family, is just one piece of the puzzle.”

The reason for Rochester’s earlier death was not for lack of need or demand. He said Rochester already had “many reputable and knowledgeable affordable housing developers who have worked there for years.”

Cleghorn and his colleagues didn’t want to step on toes or compete for the same limited resources available to do the job.

The magnitude of this project is the draw.

HELP USA wants to have a bigger presence in Western New York, Cleghorn said. This desire is motivated by its board of directors, led by Maria Cuomo Cole, the sister of former Governor Andrew Cuomo.

He sees little difference between Rochester or Buffalo, where HELP USA has two developments, or New York or Philadelphia, where the nonprofit is particularly active.

“There are a lot of hard-working people who, you know, spend too much of their family income on housing…at the expense of other things,” he said.

Cleghorn knows the Rochester area well. His wife and one of his closest friends grew up here. He spent summers here in college and he has friends he still visits often.

“That’s not how we make our development decisions,” he said. “But it was always on my radar of somewhere we wanted to be more active.”

Construction could start as early as December, but it’s more likely to take place in the spring, with the goal of finishing in 2024.

Other partners include the Rochester Urban League and Victor’s Eagle Star Housing, which works with homeless veterans.

by Netflix Peaky Blinders follows gang leader Thomas Shelby as he tries to make headway in the world after Britain’s WWI, but how close did America really come to alliance with Hitler during this time? Although the series is mostly ahistorical, many of the characters featured in Peaky Blinders are based on real historical figures. Peaky Blinders season 6, for example, introduces a new antagonist, Jack Nelson (James Frecheville), a character based on an influential historical figure.

Whereas Peaky Blinders‘ Jack Nelson is a Boston gang leader, he is based on American politician Joseph Kennedy Sr., the father of President John F. Kennedy. Like Jack Nelson, Joseph Kennedy Sr. was a close associate of President Franklin D. Roosevelt with political ambitions and controversial views. However, unlike Nelson, he was not involved in the crime, but there is historical evidence that he was engaged in financial dealings that eventually became illegal, such as insider trading on Wall Street.

Most American accounts of World War II portray the United States as a champion of human rights and the world leader in the fight against Nazi persecution; however, in reality, America’s political situation was complex and nuanced between World War I and World War II. Anti-Semitism and the Pro-Nazi Views of Jack Nelson in Peaky Blinders imply that not all Americans were against Nazism at the time, and this truth extended even to the nation’s most powerful and influential figures. As Peaky Blinders suggests that in the years leading up to World War II, Americans were not united in their views on Nazi Germany or the United States’ involvement in the war. It was possible that the United States took a pro-Nazi stance, and the story could have gone in a different direction. Here’s how close America came to allying with Hitler in real life, and how close Peaky Blinders is right about this true historical story.

Why Jack Nelson is sent to investigate Nazism in Europe

Peaky Blinders James Frecheville Jack Nelson

In Peaky Blinders season 6, Jack Nelson travels to the UK with his wife, mistress, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s son, and Gina to obtain US import licenses at top Scotch and Irish whiskey distilleries. However, he is also there on behalf of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, a close associate, to collect information regarding support for fascism in the UK. Peaky BlindersThe new villain, Jack Nelson, is a man with his own political ambitions, which allows him to serve as the President’s confidant. Roosevelt would likely be interested in information about the popularity of fascism in Britain to gauge the political situation in their European ally and to help determine America’s course of action.

Who is Jack Nelson based on – Is he a Nazi?

Peaky Blinders Jack Nelson James Frecheville

Jack Nelson is based on American politician Joseph Kennedy Sr., the father of President John F. Kennedy. Although Kennedy was certainly not a gangster like Nelson, he was also a Boston native with questionable morals. Kennedy was not a Nazi, but he was a supporter of fascism and a Nazi sympathizer, just like his Peaky Blinders temper. Kennedy, in his paranoia, believed that the Jewish people were influencing American culture and politics in corrupt and malicious ways, and while serving as Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Kennedy voiced his controversial views. In 1939 he told a British reporter that the United States Democratic Party was “a jewish production“and that Roosevelt would fall in 1940. Further, in 1940, Kennedy told the Boston Sunday Globe, “Democracy is over in England. It may be here.Due to his anti-Semitism and public denunciations of democracy, Kennedy was forced to resign as ambassador in 1940, just weeks after President Roosevelt was elected.

Peaky Blinders True Story: Joseph Kennedy’s True Story Explained

Peaky Blinders Joseph Kennedy Senior Jack Nelson

Like the real story behind Peaky Blinders character of Diana, the mistress of Oswald Mosley, the character of Jack Nelson is also inspired by an equally fascinating true historical tale. On September 6, 1888, Joseph Kennedy was born into an Irish American family in Boston, Massachusetts. After graduating from Harvard University in 1912, he became the nation’s youngest bank president at age 25. Kennedy became a multi-millionaire earning huge sums of money in finance and real estate. During World War I, he managed the production of transports and warships, which led to his close relationship with President Franklin D Roosevelt. Roosevelt appointed Kennedy Chairman of the United States Maritime Commission and then Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1938 to 1940.

As the Peaky Blinders villain, Jack Nelson, Joseph Kennedy also intended to correspond with prominent German politicians of the Nazi regime. Following his appointment as Ambassador to the United Kingdom by President Roosevelt in 1938, Kennedy met with the new German Ambassador to the Court of St. James, Herbert von Dirksen, on several occasions without the approval of the US State Department. At one such meeting he informed von Dirksen that President Roosevelt had been the victim of “Jewish influence.” When Germany invaded Poland in 1939, starting World War II, Kennedy also publicly advised President Roosevelt not to support Britain in the war against Nazi Germany.

His isolationist views, anti-Semitism and support for fascism ruined his political career. After Roosevelt’s triumph in the 1940 election, Kennedy resigned as ambassador and her relationship with Roosevelt ended. He never held another important position. When Joseph Kennedy’s son, John F. Kennedy, decided to run for Congress in 1946, Kennedy Sr. stopped pursuing his own election hopes. Instead, he put his power and resources to work for his son’s political career.

How close the United States was to working with Hitler

Peaky BlindersTommy Shelby Jack Nelson

At the beginning of the 20th century, as Peaky Blinders suggests, overt anti-Semitism was present at all levels of American society. Many influential figures publicly blamed the Jewish people for America’s problems, and elite universities such as Harvard, Yale and Princeton authorized anti-Semitic policies, including quotas on the number of Jewish students admitted. In the years leading up to World War II, anti-Semitism manifested itself in the isolationist movement. At the height of isolationism’s popularity, the isolationist group, the America First Committee, had over 800,000 members from all parts of the country, including well-known public figures such as Walt Disney and Gerald Ford.

Peaky Blinders Compelling characters and a poignant portrayal of the chaos, fear, and conflicting characteristics of the era draw attention to these lesser-known and often shocking aspects of pre-WWII American history. Yet while many isolationists were anti-Semitic, the movement’s efforts were largely aimed at keeping the United States out of the war in Europe rather than becoming firm political allies with Nazi Germany – and in May and June 1940 , the American political situation had changed considerably. The United States had initially assumed that its European allies, who had greater resources and larger populations, would easily suppress Germany’s aggression, but Hitler’s forces first won unprecedented victories and the ermany took control of Western and Central Europe, posing a substantial threat to America’s allies. Debates over US war policy came to a complete halt on December 8, 1941, the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and the first US commission disbanded shortly thereafter, as states States officially joined World War II.

It was once stories of serial killers and cult leaders that fascinated podcasters and their listeners. Increasingly, however, it’s the scammers who are topping the audio charts. Of False heiressabout Anna Delvey, and The missing crypto-queenbillion dollar cryptocurrency scam, for Chameleon: Hollywood Con Queen, on financial fraud in the cinema, the scammers make great stories. Even better, they can be enjoyed knowing that no blood has been shed. A crime without a corpse equals listening without guilt – or that’s the idea.

I still got a little shuddered listening to the new series Persona: the French deception, in which the word “genius” is used more than once in connection with its criminal protagonist. For 18 months, French-Israeli con-man Gilbert Chikli convinced employees of at least 20 companies to give him 38 million euros; later he would fraudulently extract money from billionaire businessmen, including the Aga Khan and Turkish businessman Inan Kiraç. In the series blurb, Chikli is called “one of the greatest con artists of all time”, a description with which the companies he robbed and the individuals who fell into his elaborate traps could be forgiven. to have disputed.

It’s still a hell of a story. Hosted by journalist Evan Ratliff, the series opens with the story of a Parisian bank manager known as “Madame G” who, in 2005, was tricked into thinking she was helping an operation government to thwart terrorists using an account at its branch. Chikli had uncovered personal details about Madame G, which allowed her to gain her trust and pose as “Paul”, a government agent asking for details of the bank’s biggest clients. When he then asked her to hand over €358,000 through an intermediary so he could scan the invoices to see if they had been stolen, she couldn’t have been more helpful.

The series is cleverly scripted and elegantly produced, functioning as both a character study and a cautionary tale about the persuasion tactics of globetrotting con artists. To measure the atmosphere, just listen to the propulsive and casual musical theme, “Comment te dire adieu” by Françoise Hardy. Ratliff delves into the methodology, showing how cleverly constructed lies can create a skewed reality for the so-called “brand,” tapping into their insecurities, vanity, or sense of citizenship. Chikli is portrayed not just as a trickster but as a trailblazer – thanks to him we are now living in “a golden age” of scamming, Ratliff tells us.

It’s easy to get carried away by the tone of wonder – Chikli’s boldness is something to behold. You might even find yourself shrugging your shoulders at his billionaire victims and deciding they brought him in. But what about the figures of Madame G, innocent employees sucked into a scam and then left to face the music with their bosses, investigators and the media? There’s a filthy pleasure to be had from Persona: the French deceptionalthough you may need a shower after listening.

Last week, 20 students graduated from Franklin County Adult Education. The love and support from family and friends that night was incredible, but as we all know, it takes a whole village to raise a child. We are impressed with how other members of this community have stepped up to support these students.

Origin Manufacturing enabled a student to walk in and out of work and find a quiet space to take classes remotely to complete a credit course. They kept a valuable employee and we kept a student.

Pallet One gave a student time off to attend graduation. The glow on his face was worth all the effort it took to get him to and from the event.

Hannaford has included our students’ names on posters honoring recent graduates working for them. Often our students lack recognition, but these signs were fantastic.

We know other companies have adjusted shifts and staff to help students attend classes and take tests. We know these downsides don’t come easy, but we think the rewards are worth it.

A huge shoutout has to go to John Moore and the Narrow Gauge cinema. Anyway, John always helps us. We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful setting for our ceremony.

Finally, we gratefully appreciate the support we receive from the citizens of Franklin County for our program. We know your contribution to our program is hard-earned. We couldn’t do it without you.

From all of us at Franklin County Adult Education: THANK YOU! You have had an impact on students beyond what you can imagine.

Nancy Ligertwood Allen, Director
Franklin County Adult and Community Education
